Description
Join us behind the scenes for one of the most exciting community events of the year — the Kalamazoo Holiday Parade! We’re assembling a volunteer production team to help bring this festive event to life through live broadcast coverage, interviews, and in-studio hosting. This is a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience in live event production, whether you're a student, aspiring media professional, or community member who wants to be part of something special.
Volunteer Roles Needed
Camera Operators (3 positions): As a camera operator, you'll be stationed along the parade route or in our studio to capture live footage of the parade, pre-show, and interviews. You’ll need to be comfortable operating a tripod-mounted camera, following direction from the director, and maintaining steady, well-framed shots throughout the broadcast.
Runners (2 positions): Runners are the behind-the-scenes MVPs. You'll help with everything from moving gear and supplies to communicating between teams and assisting with last-minute needs. This is a great entry-level role that offers a chance to see all areas of the production process up close.
Floor Director (1 position – Studio): The floor director is the main point of communication between the control room and on-air talent in the studio. You’ll be responsible for giving cues, keeping segments on schedule, and helping maintain order in a fast-paced live environment. Prior experience or training is strongly encouraged.
Spotters / TV Area Sign Holders (2 positions): Spotters will help guide the camera team and director by identifying which floats or parade groups are approaching next, especially in areas where visibility may be limited. Sign holders will assist in visually identifying each act or group for the on-air team, making it easier to provide accurate commentary.
Training and Preparation
All volunteers are strongly encouraged to attend equipment training sessions at PMN (Public Media Network) in the weeks leading up to the parade. This is a great opportunity to get hands-on with the gear, meet the crew, and get comfortable with your role before parade day.
If you're new to media or want a refresher, we’re offering a free 1-month training membership to parade volunteers — a great way to explore podcasting, video production, and studio equipment beyond the event!
We will be reaching out to you regarding the position you’re interested in, as well as the training needed for that role.
Be Part of the Team! Whether you're looking to build your media skills, connect with the community, or just be part of the excitement, we'd love to have you join our production crew for this year’s Kalamazoo Holiday Parade.
