News Collective: Shorts and Reels

News Collective is a dynamic five-week training program designed for individuals interested in learning how to create news content from concept to broadcast. Participants work collaboratively to research, film, edit, and present stories that focus on local people, events, and issues.

Whether you’re a beginner or someone with prior media experience, this lab provides the tools, mentorship, and platform to bring your story ideas to life. The program nurtures new voices in local media by transforming community perspectives into professional-quality news stories shared through Public Media Network.

Over five weeks, participants dive into hands-on training in community journalism and news production. They learn every stage of the process — from story development to on-camera presentation — while producing their own broadcast-ready news segment.
📅 When: Tuesdays & Fridays | 06:30 – 8:00 P.M.
📆 Dates: January 27 – February 27th, 2025 (5 Weeks)

Week 1: Discover the Story
Participants are introduced to the foundations of community journalism and storytelling. They learn newsroom workflows, how to research and pitch story ideas, and develop interviewing and voiceover planning skills. The week also introduces the technical aspects of production, including camera operation, composition, and audio recording.

Week 2: Build the Story
This week focuses on strengthening narrative development. Participants explore how to build engaging stories and craft voiceovers that shape tone, emotion, and direction within their storytelling.

Week 3: Capture the Story
Participants head into the field to capture real stories in action. They record events, interviews, and public moments that reflect the community, applying their technical and storytelling skills to uncover authentic local narratives.

Week 4: Editing
Participants will learn how to edit their projects using Daanci Resole, an editing software used by producers and community members interested in crafting stories through video. They'll discover how to create impactful narratives through editing.

Week 5: Share and Produce the Story
In the final week, participants transform their footage into compelling news segments through writing scripts, recording voiceovers, and editing with professional software. The program concludes with a Public Media Network showcase, where participants present their finished projects and celebrate their growth as emerging community storytellers
